On 23rd April 2024, the Purpose Coalition and Breaking Down Barriers Commission will host a major roundtable with Liam Byrne MP, Chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee and former Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
The event will provide insight into the future for British business under a Labour government, and the leadership role business has to play in extending enterprise and supporting the next Labour government’s ambitions to deliver economic growth, get to net-zero, and break down the barriers to opportunity. The roundtable will be an excellent opportunity to engage with Liam, who - as Chair of the Business and Trade Committee - plays a crucial role in both holding the government to account, and developing policy ideas for a future Labour government, particularly given his previous experience.
Prior to his election as Chair of the Committee, Liam served in Cabinet in the last Labour government as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Minister for the Cabinet Office, and as a Home Office Minister. He also served in Ed Miliband’s Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and will bring a wealth of experience to this roundtable and attendees. Liam was elected as Member of Parliament for Birmingham Hodge Hill in 2004.
The event will be Chaired by Nick Forbes CBE, former Member of Keir Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet.
This roundtable is only open to members of the Purpose Coalition and Breaking Down Barriers Commission.
