Centrica Powers Progress: Breaking Down Barriers to Opportunity and Equality

Centrica, the leading energy services and solutions company, has launched its latest Breaking Down Barriers Impact Report in Westminster, marking a significant milestone in its mission to drive social mobility, promote sustainability, and break down barriers to opportunity across the UK. This report, produced in collaboration with The Purpose Coalition, showcases Centrica’s commitment to fostering inclusive growth while advancing the energy transition.

Rt Hon Justine Greening, Chair of the Purpose Coalition, said: “Centrica’s work, as highlighted in this report, underscores the potential for businesses to act as true forces for good. By focusing on sustainable and inclusive growth, they are helping to build a future where everyone, regardless of their background, has the chance to succeed. This report is both a reflection of the achievements to date and a call to action for continued collaboration and innovation as we strive to create a fairer, more inclusive Britain.”

The report showcases Centrica’s initiatives designed to widen access to opportunity and drive positive change. These include expanded training and apprenticeship programmes, enhanced recruitment practices to foster diversity and inclusion, and substantial investments in green energy solutions aimed at becoming a net zero business by 2045. By setting these ambitious goals, Centrica aims to lead by example in an industry facing rapid transformation and societal expectations.

Nick Forbes CBE, Chair of the Breaking Down Barriers Commission, added: “Centrica’s report exemplifies how businesses can actively contribute to creating a more inclusive society by dismantling barriers that limit opportunities. The insights and strategies outlined here not only showcase Centrica’s leadership but also serve as a practical blueprint for other organisations. This report marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts of the Breaking Down Barriers Commission to dismantle the obstacles that limit opportunities for so many in our society.”

Centrica’s efforts span a wide range of initiatives that align closely with the Purpose Coalition’s Purpose Goals, addressing areas from workforce diversity to supporting energy transition and financial inclusion. Through the British Gas Energy Trust, Centrica has also extended significant support to those in need, doubling its energy support fund to £140 million in 2023. The organisation has also prioritised wellbeing within its workforce, introducing pioneering health programmes and expanding support mechanisms that address diverse needs.

Gary Booker, Chief Customer Officer at Centrica, highlighted the company’s vision and ongoing commitment: “At Centrica, we believe that businesses have a responsibility to act as forces for good. The initiatives and strategies detailed in this report not only demonstrate our ongoing commitment but also provide a roadmap for how other organisations can similarly rise to the challenge. By working together across industries, with government, and within our communities, we can ensure that the transition to net zero is both just and inclusive, leaving no one behind.”

Centrica’s Breaking Down Barriers Impact Report exemplifies the transformative role businesses can play in reshaping society. With initiatives that extend far beyond the energy sector, Centrica is not only addressing the pressing challenges of social inequality and sustainability but setting a powerful example for what purposeful, inclusive business can achieve. This report highlights Centrica’s commitment to a greener, fairer future where everyone, from employees to communities, benefits from increased access to opportunity.
